The Question Card Is the Most Important One
ELook at a standard deck of agile estimation cards. You’ve got the numbers, maybe a coffee cup for breaks, and the humble Question Mark (?).
Most teams ignore the question mark. They shouldn't. It is arguably the most powerful card in the entire deck.
A Real-World Sprint Saver
Engineers are natural problem solvers. When presented with a poorly written user story, their instinct is to silently fill in the blanks themselves and guess a number.
This is exactly how scope creep sneaks into your sprint. You end up estimating the work you imagined, not the work the stakeholder actually wants.
The "?" card is your emergency brake. It means, "I do not have enough information to even guess how complex this is."
Imagine a ticket that just says "Export to CSV." One dev assumes it's a simple browser download. Another assumes it requires a background job and an email notification. Playing the "?" card forces the team to stop and forces the Product Owner to define the exact edges of the feature.
Next time you are using our online estimate poker tool, don't be afraid to click the Question Mark. It’s the easiest and fastest way to protect your sprint from a disaster.
