Why We Have a Coffee Card

Sprint planning requires a massive amount of cognitive load. For an hour or two, you are mentally architecting software, analyzing technical risk, and negotiating scope with product owners, all in real-time.

The Psychology of Decision Fatigue

Psychologists call it decision fatigue. After about 45 minutes of heavy mental lifting, brain fatigue firmly sets in. People stop thinking critically. They start voting whatever the person next to them voted, just so the meeting will end faster. Your estimates go from being highly analytical to completely useless.

This is exactly why the Coffee Card exists.

In a good online estimate poker tool, you’ll find a card with a little coffee cup on it. It’s not a joke or a cute gimmick—it’s a tactical tool. If anyone in the room feels their focus slipping, they play the coffee card instead of a number during the vote.

It means: "My brain is fried, and any estimate I give you right now is garbage."

When the coffee card is played, there is no debate. The team immediately takes a 5 to 10-minute break. Get water, stretch, step completely away from the screen. You’ll be amazed at how much sharper the estimates are when you sit back down.
